Hoi An is often described as preserved. Ancient. Frozen in time.

That’s never quite true of places people still live in.

What you actually see here is movement — goods changing hands, languages overlapping, tourists drifting through systems that existed long before they arrived. This city wasn’t built to be looked at. It was built to trade.
